Re Cutting

Re Cutting

This time I would like to discuss separate heading. Because of last articles feedback. First, I would like to thank all my friends for the appreciation. Many people ask me about re cutting and how it was doing and how much wastage so on. So I decided to share my experience about re cutting stones.

When we doing re cutting two things can be happened which are:

01) Higher Wastage

02) Lower wastage

I would like to discuss how higher wastage occurs once do the re cutting and then I would like to share my thoughts about best stones for re cutting  (minimum wastage) and what are the characteristics need to have  inside the stone in order to do the proper re cutting. So my general idea is educate the people what stone they can purchase and what stone they need to pass it on. I hope it will help to save much money in big time. So let see first,

01) Higher Wastage Stones

Below Diagram Shows Perfectly Faceted Stone and defaulted facet stones. As a buyer when you going to purchase cut and polished stones view of re cutting, first you need to consider stone shapes and total height of the stones. Then you can make the decision whether you are investing or pass it on. However, most of the stones in the market have at least one of the following defaults.

So have a look following diagrams .First Top diagram shows perfectly cut stone. And rest I show the defected stone which is out of shape and poorly cut.

When you see this type of defects do not purchase for re cutting. It will occur extremely high wastage and ended up a very small stone

Even, if you are a final buyer looking stone for your personal jewelry piece still my advice do not purchase this kind of stones. Because when you giving to jeweler or the setter to set these stones he will have big problems to set in your jewelry piece even he did. The setting appearance looks unattractive at all.

Why is high wastage?

www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 01Stone 01 :

In this particular stone  Pavilion move to words the right side so at that point when we going to align cult (bottom of the stone) facets in to the center of the stone, suddenly stone become smaller in diameter. Investing money this kind of stone such a waste. This stone I will put rank 02 in high wastage scale

Stone 02 :  www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 02

In this particular stone Pavilion move to words the Left side so at that point when we going to align cult (bottom of the stone) facets in to the center of the stone, suddenly stone become smaller in diameter. Investing money this kind of stone also such a waste. This stone I will put rank 02 in high wastage scale.

Stone 03 :

In this particular stone Pavilion is too shallow nearly close to crown (top). So this kind of stone when we do re cutting because of shallowness of the bottom side first we measured total height of the stone then according to the diagram we calculate how bigger diameter stone we can have it in finally. This the worst case.I will put this rank 01 in high wastage scale. My advise do not invest pass it.

www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 04Stone 04 :

In this particular stone  Crown move to words the right side so at that point when we doing re cutting  have an wastage but comparison with stone 01,02,03 have fairly low wastage. But Once again this stone also reducing diameter of the stone when we aligning the stone table .I will put this rank 03 in high wastage scale.

www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 08Stone 05 :

In this particular stone  Crown move to words the Left side so at that point when we doing re cutting  have an same issue in stone 04 once again wastage by the comparison with stone 01,02,03 have fairly low .But this stone also reducing diameter of the stone when we aligning the stone table .I will put this one also in rank 03 of high wastage scale.

www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 09Stone 06 :

In this particular stone Crown is too shallow close to pavilion (bottom). So kind of stone when we do re cutting shallowness of the top side first we measured total height of the stone then according to the height we calculate correct proportion we can cut out of the stone. This stone also have same problem like stone no. 03. I will put this as rank 01 in high wastage scale. My advise do not invest pass it.

According to My cutting experience above stone not worth to buy for re cutting.Further more all above stones when we do re cutting stone diameter will change it means stone getting smaller in diameter. However They have some stones you can purchase for re cutting too.

02) Lower Wastage Stones

Following Stones have an lower wastage and stone diameter not change while do the re cutting

Why is lower wastage?

Stone 01 :

In this particular stone  Pavilion had more depth than the standard.Once you will do the re cutting of this particular stone diameter of the stone would not loose only loose bit of stone bottom.I will put this rank 01  in lower wastage scale.

www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 06Stone 02 :

In this particular stone  Crown is much height than the standard. This is a another stone type while you will do the re cutting diameter  would not loose only loose bit of top  when you are getting in to the correct proportions.I will put this rank 01  in lower wastage scale.

www.ceylonnaturalgems.com blog re cutting 01 07Stone 03 :

In this particular stone  Crown and pavilion both out of propitiation.Total stone height is grater than standard height of the stone. In this case when it do re cutting top and bottom both loosing. But diameter of the stone would not loose. By comparison with first two higher wastage occurs but most impotent feature of this type of stones can get good final stone for a high skill gem cutter than other two stones.I will put this rank 02 in lower wastage scale.

Finally, when you buying stones for view of re cutting not all the stones having same wastage some are lower wastage but some are having much higher wastage than what you thought the best way to do this before you buy get some advise from highly skill gem cutter.
